Across the Middle East, from North Africa to India, the custom of Henna hand-painting is intended to beautify and protect, through mystical powers and promises of good luck. The ceremonial practice is instantaneously transformed in Parnes’ series, featuring patterns now made famously desirable by such high-end brands as Louis Vuitton and Gucci. The almost magical supremacies subtly assured by these globalized symbols create a juxtaposition challenging contemporary social beliefs in the adoration of intensely commercial marques.
