Hajji Baba
40 x 30cm
Neon
Edition of 5 + 2 AP
Neon work made for this exhibition, New York & Amsterdam 2014-15. With thanks to the Museum of Contemporary Ancient Arabia.
This work is inspired by a seal from the Dilmun period (about 2200 BC) found on the island of Bahrain, and displayed in the island’s National Museum. Bahrain, known in antiquity as an abode of the Gods, even paradise, remained a vibrant cultural hublot replica and trading hub throughout its history.
The historical ‘return of the prodigal son’, establishing linkages with a largely unclaimed past, hidden on the stones within the Middle East. Recognizing the mythological Iranian joke figure ‘Hajji Baba’ in the 4000 year old seal.
